PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability even in the case of scanning accompanied by sudden change in the direction and circular movement when the position is detected by the rotation of wheels installed on both ends of a line image sensor. SOLUTION: Sensor rotary shafts are fitted to both ends of a line image sensor 1 and wheels 4 and 5 traveling on an original face and rotary encoders containing sensor gears, encoder gears, slit boards and encoder sensors are installed on right/left. A housing rotary shaft 16 is installed in a position shifted from the center shaft of the line image sensor 1 in the horizontally perpendicular direction. The upper part of the housing rotary shaft 16 is kept by a dome-like housing 17 and the line image sensor 1 is freely rotated. Thus, the line image sensor 1 becomes always perpendicular to a force which is applied to the housing rotary shaft 16 and is parallel to the surface of the original, and missing of the image is hardly caused.
