The invention relates to a free-stream centrifuge comprising a device for braking the rotor. Prior art free-stream centrifuges are braked by bearing friction as soon as the oil pressure falls below a certain value. The aim of the invention is to minimize the bearing friction as much as possible in order to attain highest possible rotational speeds. In doing this, the long running-on of the centrifuge and noises or bearing wear associated therewith is disadvantageous especially when used in passenger cars. For this reason, the invention provides that friction partners (15a, 15b) are placed on a centrifuge comprising a housing (10) and rotor (11). Said friction partners are pressed against one another by a spring (20) when the operating oil pressure is fallen short of, thus stopping the rotor. The rotor is provided in a plain bearing (12) which simultaneously forms the inlet (23) and which is provided with a roller bearing (19) thus leading to an extremely low level of bearing friction.
