The present invention relates to an in vitro method for diagnosing or detecting a predisposition to a disease or disorder associated with abnormal Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor gene expression and kits for use in such a method. The method comprises examining regulatory elements associated with the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor gene to detect the presence of a genetic polymorphism which is linked to the disease or disorder.
