The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1), especially for a motor vehicle, which is provided with a combustion chamber (4). Fuel can be directly injected into said combustion chamber by means of an injection valve (9) during an induction phase in a first mode of operation or during a compression phase in a second mode of operation and can be ignited by a spark plug (10) . Additional delayed fuel injection into said combustion chamber (4) is carried out in order to purify the storage catalyst.
