The stacking device is provided for mail items (1) of different size and lying on its longer edge. A support bracket (5) holds a stack of items received at a stacking station and moves according to the thickness of the stack to be formed. The bracket is of such a size and positioned so that its lower edge is below the top edge of the smallest mail item and its upper edge is above the center of gravity of the biggest mail item.
