A spinning reel mechanism comprises a reel (16) which is rotatably mounted with respect to a frame (18), a reel strip (10) which is supported by the reel (16) and has a plurality of symbols (12) arranged at selected positions therealong as well as a respective indicator (20) associated with said symbols (12) at said selected positions, and a sensor (24) which monitors the passing of the indicators (20) as the reel (16) and thus the reel strip (10) is rotated.
