A process for the production of alkyl and/or alkenyl ethers with terminal alkyl groups involves reacting alcohols of formul R<1>O-(CH2CH2O)n-(CH2CH(CH3)O)m-H (I) with dialkyl carbonates of formula R<3>OCOOR<4> (II), in which R<1> = optionally unsaturated, linear or branched 6-22C alkyl, alkenyl and/or acyl and/or a hydrocarbon residue optionally substituted with a group R<2>; R<2> = H, 1-12C alkyl, glyceryl or the residue of a 2-6C alkylglycol; n = 0-15; m = 0-10; R<3>, R<4> = 1-8C alkyl.
