N-cyanomethylated chitosans (A) contg. repeat units of formula (I) are new. In (I): n1 = 0-0.6 (0.05-0.20); n2 = 0-0.20 (0.05-0.10) and (n3 + n4) = 0.4-1.0 (0.8-0.95). Also claimed are: (i) the prepn. of (A) by reacting chitosan with formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide for 0.5-12 (2-5) hrs. at 10-70 degrees C according to reaction scheme (X); (ii) hydrolysed N-cyanomethylated chitosans (B) contg. repeat units of formula (II); (iii) the prepn. of (B) by hydrolysis of (A); and (iv) cosmetic formulations contg. at least one cpd. (B) and cosmetically compatible carrier or auxiliary substances. In Reaction Scheme (X): X = 5-10000 (20-500).
