PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a marking apparatus in which maintenance is enhanced by simplifying the structure and reducing the size thereof and high quality printing can be carried out in a short time while eliminating shift. SOLUTION: Printing is carried out by moving a print head 7 laterally along the horizontal beam 22c of a body 10 traveling in same direction in synchronism with the carrying speed of a steel plate 2 along a carrying path 3. Subsequently, the traveling body 10 is reset to the upstream side in the carrying direction and printing is carried out again by moving the print head 7 reversely. Printing is carried out continuously by repeating such a print operation and a mark is put on the upper surface 14 of the steel plate 2.
