PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new ethynylnaphthalene derivative capable of providing a liquid crystal composition which has a low threshold voltage, a large refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and a wide temperature range. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R is a 1 to 8C alkyl, an alkoxy, a 2 to 8C alkenyl or the like; the ring A is trans-1,4-cyclohyxylene or (fluorinated) 1,4-phenylene; X1 to X3 are each H or F; M is a single bond, CH2CH2 or C≡C; Xa, Xb are each H or F; Z is F, Cl, trifluoromethoxy, cyano or the like]. For example, 1-fluoro-2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)-6-(4-propylphenyl) ethynylnaphthalene. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a copper catalyst.
