PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack and pinion steering system capable of improving the operatability by reducing the sliding frictional resistance and free from the problems caused by the oscillation by reducing the oscillation of a rack bar. SOLUTION: A rack bar 9 provided with a rack tooth engageable with a pinion is slidably supported by a rack guide 10, and the guide 10 is pressed in the rack bar direction by a spring. Circular arc-shaped recessed surfaces 29, 30 of a curved sliding plate piece 26 fixed to a rack guide base 23 are circumscribed with a circular arc outer peripheral surface of the rack bar at regions of an angle not over 50 degree at both sides in the angular direction from a center line passing the center of radius of curvature of the circular arc outer peripheral surface 16 of the rack bar 9, and located with clearance with respect to the circular arc outer peripheral surface of the rack bar 9 at regions of an angle over 50 degree, and a clearance length L between both ends in the angular direction of the circular arc-shaped recessed surfaces 29, 30 and the circular arc outer peripheral surface of the rack bar is within a range of 0.02-0.20 mm.
