PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1,4-butanediol and/or tetrahydrofuran in a high conversion and in a high yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing 1,4-butanediol and/or tetrahydrofuran comprises subjecting a maleic acid compound as a raw material to a catalytic hydrogenation reaction. Therein, the maleic acid compound is hydrogenated in a liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst prepared by carrying at least one metal selected from the metals of the groups 7 to 10 in the periodic table and, if necessary, Sn on a carbonaceous carrier having a specific surface area of 10 to 700 m2/g.
