PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound free from a halogen atom, useful as a flame-retardant. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula (R is H, a 1-10C alkyl, phenyl or the like; m is 1-3; n is 1-9). The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting (B) phosphorus oxychloride with (C) a dihydroxyaryl such as hydroquinone in the presence of (A) an amine such as triethylamine preferably at 0-70 deg.C for 5-10 hours. The amount of the component A used is generally 2 to 2.3 equivalents based on the component B. The amount of the component C used is generally 2-2.3 equivalents based on the component B. A solvent such as 1,4-dioxane, etc., can be used in the reaction.
