PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nematic liquid crystal composition having a wide operational temperature range, an excellent responsiveness and a good contrast against a desirable birefringence, and a liquid crystal display device such as TN-LCD, STN-LCD, TFT-LCD, etc., having improved electrical optical properties. SOLUTION: A nematic liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal component A comprising a compound of the formula (wherein R11 is a 2-10C linear alkyl group or the like; R12 is H or 1-5C linear alkyl group; A11 is a cyclohexane ring or the like; and Z11 is a single bond or -C≡C-, provided that when A11 is a cyclohexane ring, Z11 is -C≡C-) and a liquid crystal component B comprising a compound having a dielectric constant anisotropy of +2 or larger. Here, the liquid crystal material has a dielectric constant anisotropy of +3 or larger, a nematic phase/isotropic liquid phase transition temperature of 60 deg.C or higher and a crystal- or smectic phase/nematic phase transition temperature of 0 deg.C or lower.
