PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to exposure new postal services such as appropriate information processing by interpreting recognized postal number or address information as entitled to services other than mail delivery and obtaining format information based on this interpretation information when such interpretation is made, to perform the recognizing process of an image of mail. SOLUTION: Printed information present on both first/second surfaces of mail 1 is subjected to a photoelectric conversion by a duplex scanner 20 of a postal sorting machine 10 to obtain image data. This image data is transferred to a character recognizing device 100 or the like to process address and the like by recognition and the process results are transferred to a system control device 50. When the mail 1 is verified as of such a kind that its form needs to be read, the recognition results and an image intended for processing of the character recognizing device 100 are transferred to respectively different character recognizing devices 200. In these devices 200, the image of the mail is processed by recognition based on acquired format information and the pieces of the information processed are transferred to an information processing subsystem 300, a form design printing system 400 and the like for use with collected information return services. |
