PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing highly pure 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, by which the highly pure 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid free from residual nitrogen components can profitably be produced. SOLUTION: This method for producing highly pure 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid comprises oxidizing a 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene, converting the obtained crude 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid into the amine salt or ammonium salt, decomposing the salt to obtain the pure 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid crystals having particle diameters of <=50μm, and then thermally treating the crystals at 40 to 350 deg.C to remove nitrogen components originated from the residual amine salt or ammonium salt.
