With the fully automatic monitoring and subsequent regulation of the cutting process for the division of a line (1) into individual bars or stoppers, in order to attain additionally a fully automatic separation into short and long bars or stoppers, one compares a certain actual length value in a digital way with the help of an opto-electronic sampling device (4) on one hand with a minimum and a maximum set point length of a set point length range. On the other hand, one compares the certain actual value in a digital way with the help of the opto-electronic device with a minimum value, formed from the minimum set point value less a tolerance value and a maximum set point value plus a tolerance value. An actual value that is smaller than the given minimum value or greater than the given maximum value causes an error signal which causes an error signal controlling a throw-out device for the rejection of the faulty bar or stopper only with a simultaneous adjustment of the cutting instant of the cutting device in the correcting sense.
