<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain optimum picture transmission, in matching with a decoding capability of an MPEG decoding processing section. SOLUTION: A transmission terminal 2 receives a picture signal from a picture input device 1, encodes the picture signal into MPEG picture data, and transmits the data to a reception terminal 3 via a network 4. The reception terminal 3 decodes the MPEG picture data and gives the decoded data to a monitor 5. There is a reception terminal 3 that adds a copy picture to interleaved MPEG picture data resulting interleaving a B picture from the original MPEG picture data, to decode the data into picture signals having a correct frame interval and the other reception terminal 3 that can not correctly decode the interleaved MPEG picture data but can correctly decode the complete MPEG picture data only. Prior to the transmission of data to the reception terminal 3 that has made a transmission request, the transmission terminal 2 detects the decoding capability of the reception terminal 3 of the destination and transmits the interleaved MPEG picture data or the complete MPEG picture data, depending on the decoding capability to the terminal 3.</p> |
