The light or indicator consists of a light source and an optical light diffuser (10) in the form of a plate (13) made from one transparent material, containing embedded spheres (14) of a second transparent material, the two materials having different refraction indices. The balls are between 0.1 and 100 microns in size and form between 0.05 and 5 per cent of the plate by weight, and either of the two materials can be tinted.
