PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which reduces the power consumption for monochromatic read. SOLUTION: Mode data selected by an operation part 11 is transferred to a controller 12, and color read or monochromatic read is decided by a control part 13. In the color read mode, a current for a required quantity of light is made flow to a light source 1; and in the monochromatic read mode, a current smaller than that in the color read mode is made flow to the light source to read an image, and read image data is converted to RGB data by a CCD 5 and is stored in a buffer memory 14.
