According to the invention, transmission partial resources (tpr1...3) which are respectively allocated to decentralised communication devices (ONU1...3) are at least partially reduced and the transmission quality of at least one connection (vCBR, vVBRrt, vVBRnrt1...x, vGFR1...y, vUBR), established via the respective reduced partial resource (tpr1...3) is determined. The scope of the respective partial resource (tpr1...3) is modified or maintained, depending on the transmission quality. An effective utilisation of the transmission resources (rpon) can be achieved in an advantageous manner, by maintaining the transmission quality of the individual connections (vCBR, vVBRrt, vVBRnrt1...x, vGFR1...y, vUBR).
