A nitrogen containing compound is added to break crosslinks formed during hydrogenation. Hydrogenation of polymers composed of diene monomer units and nitrile group containing monomer units, involves splitting the crosslinks formed by adding a compound of formula (I) or a compound of formula (II), before, during or after the hydrogenation. R1-N(H)-X (I) (R1)(R2)C=N-Y (II) R1 = H, 1-30 C (cyclo)alkyl or 6-30 C aromatic group R2 = 1-30 C (cyclo)alkyl or 6-30 C aromatic group X = -R3, -OR4, -SR4 or -NR5R6 R3, R4 and R5 = H, 1-30 C (cyclo)alkyl or 6-30 C aromatic group, optionally containing a group 13-17 heteroatom R6 = 1-30 C (cyclo)alkyl or 6-30 C aromatic group, optionally containing a group 13-17 heteroatom Y = -R7, -OR8, -SR8, -NR9R10 or -N=CR11R12 R7-R12 = H, 1-30 C (cyclo)alkyl or 6-30 C aromatic group, optionally containing a group 13-17 heteroatom An Independent claim is also included for a polymer composition that contains a hydrogenated polymer composed of diene monomer units and nitrile group containing monomer units. This hydrogenated polymer has an alpha/beta peak ratio more than 1 (measured by 1H-NMR). The alpha peak = 2.05-2.2 ppm and the beta peak = 1.8-2.05 ppm, while the gel content less than 15 wt.% and the molecular weight distribution of the soluble part of the polymer composition less than 10.
