PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-soluble copolymer useful for producing a saline- absorbing copolymer with high absorbency for aqueous electrolyte solutions such as urine and sweat by copolymerization between each specific three kinds of vinyl monomers in respectively specified amounts. SOLUTION: This water-soluble copolymer is obtained by copolymerization between (A) a t-amino group-contg. vinyl monomer, (B) a carboxyl-contg. vinyl monomer and (C) a sulfonate salt-contg. vinyl monomer at 1-5 mol% based on the total number of moles of both the A and B monomers, wherein the molar ratio A/B is pref. (20:80) to (80:20). As for this copolymer, an aqueous solution thereof in the concentration of 20 wt.% has a viscosity of 50-800 cp at 30 deg.C. The saline-absorbing copolymer with an artificial seawater absorption magnification of 10-30 is obtained by post-crosslinking of the above copolymer using a crosslinking agent, wherein the crosslinking agent is pref. a polyfunctional compound having at least two functional groups of either one kind selected from hydroxyl and amino groups, and the like.
