PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer which has a small mol.wt. distribution and is useful as a dispersant, a coagulant, and so on, by radically polymerizing a radically polymerizable monomer in the presence of a specific chain transfer agent in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: This method for producing a polymer comprises radically polymerizing (A) one or more kinds of radically polymerizable monomers which are soluble in water or are soluble in the water after hydrolyzed. Therein, the polymerization is carried out in the presence of water and (B) a radically copolymerizable compound having a (substituted) alkyl group and a thioether group in the same molecule. The component B is preferably a compound of the formula (R1 is H, a 1 to 4C alkyl, phenyl, carboxyl, or the like; R2 is a 1 to 12C alkyl, a 6 to 12C aromatic hydrocarbon, an aralkyl hydrocarbon, or the like). The component A is preferably (i) a water-soluble radically polymerizable monomer having a carboxylic acid (salt) group, a sulfonic acid (salt) group, or the like, and/or (ii) a radically polymerizable monomer having an acid anhydride group, a lower alkyl ester group, or the like, which is soluble in water after hydrolyzed.
