PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent creases generated through shrinkage of an ink ribbon in the widthwise direction from entering into a print part to cause deterioration of print quality. SOLUTION: In a line thermal printer where ink is transferred from an ink ribbon I to a print medium S by heating a plurality of heating elements 24 in a line thermal head 16 arranged linearly on a substrate 23, axial direction of a tubular surface 28 passing through the heating element 24 while being bent at the edge part of the substrate 23 and pressing the ink ribbon I separated from the print medium S is set in parallel with the arranging direction of the heating elements 24. The ink ribbon I begins to shrink in the widthwise direction when a tension is applied in the longitudinal direction, but the part touching the tubular surface 28 is prevented from shrinking by a frictional force acting thereon. Furthermore, the ink ribbon I is prevented from slipping on the tubular surface 28 because it makes surface contact with the tubular surface 28.
