PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to reduce battery consumption and prolong life time of a battery by using a sensor to minimize a load generated in an automatic retractable/extendable antenna system. CONSTITUTION: A pair of rollers(430,440) are fixed to a driving motor(410) by a bracket(420), and are supplied with power from a driving motor(410) to retract or extend a rod antenna. The roller(430) has at least one protrude(431a) directed downward. The rotation motor has a motor shaft(411) surrounded with a cover. A rotation detecting unit(450) is installed in the roller(430) to detects if the rollers are rotating. The rotation detecting unit(450) includes a light emitting section and a light receiving section. As the driving roller(430) rotates, the protrude(431a) passes between the light emitting section and the light receiving section. Then, the rotation detecting unit(450) detects that the driving roller is rotating.
