The invention relates to a restraint system for vehicle occupants which comprises an airbag having a plurality of chambers and which comprises a gas storage for providing the quantity of gas required for inflating the airbag, whereby the gas storage has at least one pressure chamber with compressed gas that is stored under pressure therein. The aim of the invention is to enable the individual airbag chambers to be filled in a controlled manner. To this end, the device that provides gas is comprised of pressure chambers (17) which are assigned to the individual chambers of the airbag, which are sealed off from one another, and which have compressed gas (cold gas) stored under pressure therein. An additional pre-chamber (21) is provided as an actuating element for displacing the closure element (15). Said pre-chamber is filled with a compressed gas and can be opened in the instance of an actuation via an ignition device (25) in such a manner that the compressed gas flowing out of the pre-chamber displaces the closure element into the release position for the discharge openings (12).
