COMPOUND HAVING TETRAHYDRONAPHTHALENE SKELETON AND LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME

A tetrahydronaphthalene derivative represented by general formula (I) and a liquid crystal composition containing the same. The compound having general formula (I) has not only excellent properties as a liquid crystal, but also excellent compatibility with a liquid crystal compound or composition being currently used, and further the addition thereof to such a compound or composition allows the marked reduction of a threshold value for voltage with little detriment to response characteristics. The above compound can be commercially produced with ease, and is colorless and chemically stable. Accordingly, a liquid crystal composition containing the compound is a practical liquid crystal which is extremely useful for a liquid crystal display which requires a wide working temperature range, an operation at a low voltage and a fast response.
