摘要 <p>A method of manufacturing an aluminium - ceramic oxide (e.g. alumina) composite body 163 comprises the steps of reducing a porous oxide-based ceramic body (31, Figs. 1-2B) using magnesium nitride, infiltrating molten aluminium (41, Figs. 1 and 2A) into the body (31, Figs. 1-2B) to form a composite billet (45, Figs. 2B-3 and 7) which is extruded into a sheet 158 from which composite bodies 163 are punched. A composite body 163 clad on either face with an aluminium alloy 157 may be formed by placing an aluminium alloy billet (152, Fig. 7) between the extrusion die (153, Fig. 7) and the composite billet (45, fig. 7) before extruding. Back plates 163 for supporting the brake pads (72 and 175, Figs. 6 and 11) of disc brakes may be formed using this method, the surfaces of the back plates 163 being ground for bonding of the brake pads thereto.</p>
