The method involves feeding the signal in the time-frequency domain to a segmenter after successful evaluation of azimuth angles of individual sampled values of the received signal, then passing the signal on for further processing. Information regarding an associated marked region is sent with the segmented region. The co-ordinates of the region under investigation are expanded with the addition of data fields bounding on the region and used to select measurement cells. Cells with signal levels higher than a threshold level are combined into a footprint, azimuth deviations are computed and the generated footprint is compared in a central evaluation unit by pattern comparison and a scenario-based rule set.
