Methods for monitoring sulfonyl halide functional group content of materials

Sulfonyl fluoride functional group content of a material is monitored to determine the amount of conversion of the functional groups into other groups by measuring the amount of electromagnetic radiation transmitted though the material. The frequency of the radiation is typically in the mid infrared range. Utility of the monitoring process may be in the manufacture of cation exchange membranes where the content of sulfonyl fluoride functional groups in a precursor fluoro polymer with sulfonyl fluoride groups in it's side chains is measured during conversion of these groups to sulfonic acid groups by hydrolysis.
