The assessment of the quality of a splice provides high-precision results only when the dimensions of the light-conducting fiber core, i.e. the spatial distribution of the refractive index, said distribution determining the attenuation behavior, in the area of the splice, are used in the calculation of the attenuation. As a result, the dimensions of the splice are measured in a three-dimensional manner by optical systems (12, 14), and the spatial distribution of the refractive index on the splice is derived therefrom. The field distribution corresponding to a mode that is capable of propagating in the glass fiber is fixed within a first spatial region situated in front of the splice in the beam direction. In addition, the field distribution of this mode is determined within a second spatial region situated behind the splice in a beam direction while taking into consideration the spatial distribution of the refractive index on the splice, and the splice attenuation is calculated from the intensity values assigned to both field distributions.
