The back massage device is incorporated in a seat backrest (1) for providing a self-massage effect via a pair of parallel massage bands (6,7) positioned between at least 2 support bands (2,3) acting as the backrest. The massage bands are provided as endless bands with attached massage elements (15), each passed around a driven roller (8,9), a pressure element (12,13) and a deflection roller (10,11). Each of the pressure elements is displaced along the respective massage band and moved transverse to the support surface provided by the support bands via a manual control, for altering the massage pressure and massage point.
