PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the safety of a maintenance and inspection work by providing a load detecting device capable of detecting the presence of a maintenance worker when the maintenance worker gets on a car, notifying another worker in a machine room of the presence by the detection signal, and making the elevator inoperable in the machine chamber. SOLUTION: In an elevator for raising and lowering a car 9 and a balance weight 3 through a rope 5 by a traction machine 4 set in a machine room 1, a load detecting device 8 is provided on the roof part of the car 9, and it detects that a maintenance worker A gets on the car 9 and transmits the detection signal to a control board 2 within the machine room 1. According to this, an alarm device within a car control BOX 7 and an alarm device 10 provided on the control board 2 of the machine room 1 are operated to notify a worker B within the machine room 1 of the presence of the worker A on the car. When a maintenance operation mode SW is OFF, a car load detecting device signal is turned ON and a machine room operation switch is turned OFF to make the elevator inoperable in the machine room 1.
