PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a color image reader miniaturized by using an electro luminescence EL element to simplify the configuration and whose read capability is improved. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a light source 102 having a plurality of electro luminescence elements 104R, 104G, 104B that emit lights in different colors to light an original 101 and an image sensor 106 that applies photoelectric conversion to a light reflected in the original 101 and reads image information of the original 101 by using an electric signal converted from the light. The color of the light from the light source 102 is sequentially selected by controlling the electro luminescence elements 104R, 104G, 104B and on the other hand, the image sensor 106 reads the reflected light in the original 101 by sequentially switching the light depending on each color of the light emitted to the original 101.
