PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cellulose having improved wettability and useful for significantly shortening the disintegration time of a solid preparation by treating the surface of cellulose with a specific compound. SOLUTION: The surface of (A) a hydroxypropyl cellulose having low degree of substitution is coated with (B) a surfactant (e.g. polyoxyethylene glycol or sodium laurylsulfate) or (C) a wetting agent (e.g. propylene glycol or sucrose). The coating is carried out e.g. by adding the above components to a dehydrated cake in the synthesis of the component A or immersing the component A in a solution produced by dissolving the component B or C in a solvent (e.g. ethanol). The addition amount of the component B or C is preferably 0.1-4 wt.% based on the component A.
