PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plastic optical fiber preform which makes it possible to obtain nearly constant transmission loss along the longitudinal direction of a plastic optical fiber and a process for producing the plastic optical fiber. SOLUTION: The process for producing the plastic optical fiber 5 formed by coaxial superposition of resin bodies 1 and 2 having refractive indices varying from each other includes a stage for coaxially arranging the resin bodies 1 and 2 having the refractive indices varying from each other, a stage for heat treating the resin bodies 1 and 2 in such a manner that the volatile component contents in the resin bodies 1 and 2 attain <=1 wt.% and a stage for obtaining the preform 5 by thermally fusing the resin bodies 1 and 2. In such a case, the resin bodies 1 and 2 are heat treated before the thermal fusing of the resin bodies, by which the boundary irregularity along the longitudinal direction of the resin bodies 1 and 2 is sufficiently eliminated. The volatile components are sufficiently removed from the resin bodies 1 and 2 at the time of the thermal fusing and, therefore, the generation of the volatile components may be sufficiently prevented. |
