PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for searching channels are provided to sequentially tune to broadcast signals corresponding to all channels except the channel on which a program is currently being broadcasted and to extract program information according to it, thereby displaying the information on a main screen as a character form. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for searching channels comprises: a first tuner(10) for selecting a channel selected by a user; a second tuner(20) for extracting program information; a program decoder(30) for receiving the program information extracted in the second tuner to decode it; a control(80) unit for outputting a control signal to the second tuner and to the program decoder, so that program information corresponding to channels except the channel on which a program is currently being broadcast is output, when a channel search key signal is externally inputted; and a display unit(50) for displaying a TV video signal output from the first tuner and the program information output from the program decoder on a screen(60), according to the control signal from the control unit.
