PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct smear correction processing that can accurately correct density without the need for provision of a plurality of density correction tables, with respect to smear production quantities fluctuated depending on a change in the strength and the incident range of incident light. SOLUTION: A smear production amount is calculated on the basis of an optical black pixel output of a CCD line sensor 4, black correction data are calculated on the basis of a dark output distribution of the CCD line sensor 4, the width of an X-ray film which is an object of reading is detected before reading of an image, a coefficient is calculated on the basis of the detected width. Smear correction data are calculated by using the calculated coefficient, and the black correction data and the smear correction data are subtracted from an image signal obtained by the CCD line sensor 4 which read the image.
