A bias circuit (28) for a photodetector improves the reliability of photodetector operation. The bias circuit applies bias voltage to a photodetector (3) that amplifies current depending on the bias voltage. The bias circuit comprises a power supply node (VDD) and a self-bias circuit (30) connected between the power supply node and the photodetector to vary the time constant of the bias circuit depending on the optical energy received by the photodetector.
