The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1), in particular for a motor vehicle. Said internal combustion engine is provided with a combustion chamber (4), in which fuel can be injected directly by an injection valve (9) and ignited by a spark plug (10) during an induction phase in a first operational mode, or during a compression phase in a second operational mode. An air/fuel mixture can be fed into the combustion chamber (4) by tank ventilation elements (15, 16, 17). The control device (18) controls and/or regulates the internal combustion engine (1) in such a way, that in a third operational mode, a lean air/fuel mixture is induced into the combustion chamber (4) using the tank ventilation elements (15, 16, 17) and that fuel is additionally injected into the combustion chamber (4) during the induction and compression phases. |
