APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING FLUID FLOW IN A WELLBORE

An apparatus and method for controlling the fluid flow in a wellbore (12) provides a side pocket mandrel (16) having a main bore (208), an offset bore (210), and a radial passageway (218) providing communication therebetween. Inlet orifices (18) through the outer wall of the mandrel provide fluid communication between the offset bore (210) and an exterior of the mandrel. A choke, or valve, attached to the mandrel is adjustable at and between an opened and closed position to control flow rate through the inlet orifices and into the offset bore. The radial passageway (218) and the inlet orifices are sized to provide full bore flow into the main bore and, thus, the tubing (10). Applicable well tools include a seal bore to protect the walls of the offset bore; an injection valve to facilitate injection into the formation (14); and a pack off valve adapted to seal the offset bore and prevent fluid flow therethrough.
