The mantle of a suction roller, for use in a papermaking or cardboard prodn. machine, has a pattern of openings (1) with grooves (2a,2b) formed between web sections (4). The grooves give a direct connection between adjacent openings, and a wire (5) is inserted into at least one groove (2a,2b) along its whole length. The groove (2a,2b) holding a wire (5) runs at least partially over openings (1). Wires (5) can be laid in intersecting grooves. The wire (5) is bonded into place at one or more points, at the mantle or at the intersecting wire. The wire (5) is of metal or a synthetic material.
