In the present invention there is disclosed a process for preparing N-methyl-3-(1-methyl-4-piperidinyl)-1H-indole-5-ethanesulfonamide and physiologically acceptable salts and derivatives thereof. The invented process is characterized by reducing the compound of the general formula II or a salt thereof in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst based on noble metal of a homogeneous catalyst. The compound of the general formula I is usable as a vasoconstrictive substance, particularly for treating migraine. In the present invention there is also claimed a novel intermediate of the general formula II.
