Heating system for railway point switches, uses gas burner with automatic ignition system to prevent freezing of points

The heating assembly is attached to the outer side of the rail (8) by a so-called Caddy Clamp. The mixture of gas and air is fed via a channel (2). Below the fuel channel is another channel (9) which carries the ignition flame supply. The mixture is ignited when the temperature drops below 2 degrees C., and serves to defrost the rail. The heating system is relatively insensitive to vibration and the flame is not extinguished by winds or the draught from passing trains.
