PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new methine compound which, when incorporated in a silver halide photographic sensitive material, causes spectral sensitization and hardly exhibits a residual color. SOLUTION: A methine compound of the formula is incorporated. In the formula, Z1 is a group of atoms necessary for forming a 5- or 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocycle; Z2 is a group of atoms for forming a cycloalkyldiene ring which may be fused with a benzene ring provided that the ring formed by Z2 may be fused at any positions of the benzene ring and that Z2 may be further substituted or fused with a heterocycle or a benzene ring; R1 is H, a halogen, mercapto, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylthio, alkenylthio, arylthio, or heterocyclic; R2 is an alkyl, aryl, or heterocyclic; L1 and L2 are each methine; p1 is 0 or 1; V1 is a substituent; n is 0-2; M1 is a charge-balanced counterion; and m1 is a number of 0-10 necessary for neutralizing the charge. This methine compound is added in an amount of 1×10-6-8×10-3 mol per mol of a silver halide.
