PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase a printing rate by entering information relative to the fixing properties of ink to a printing medium and controlling standby time for the drive of an ink head between main scans based on the entered information relative to the fixing properties. SOLUTION: A control processing module 49 for ink head standby time in PROM has entered sets of information relative to the penetrating properties of ink to a printing medium and the environmental condition at a printing site and decides ink fixing time Tf which is appropriate to a plurality of printing media and the ink fixing time in the environmental condition at a printing site, referring to an ink fixing time table storing such printing media and ink fixing time. Next, the module 49 decides the width Wx of an image based on entered image data. As a result of these decisions, the ink head standby time Tw is represented by Tf-2.Wx/Vs (in this formula, Vs is the scan rate of the ink head) and the standby time for the drive of a main scan by the ink head 28 is set based on information relative to the value obtained by the formula.
