PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of percussive noises and abrasion due to impingement in a valve lifter of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This valve lifter comprises a smooth, curved surface 20 in an abutment surface 9 of a main body 2a of a lifter go that when the valve lifter tilts, an end part 4a of a valve stem 4 and the abutment surface 9 are continuously contacted with each other owing to the curved surface 20. Accordingly, when the valve lifter tilts inside a bore of a lifter boss, the end part 4a of the valve stem 4 and the abutment surface 9 are continuously contacted with each other so that generation of percussive noises can be prevented. In addition, the curved surface 20 forms a wedge-shaped clearance between the end part 4a of the valve stem 4 and the abutment surface 9, thereby facilitating entry of a lubricant into the clearance.
