PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make theoretical calculation more reflectible in the design of a distillation tower than the tower design in prior arts, by providing the lowest bed of beds for packing materials at a height which falls within a specific range from the next above bed and making the overall height of packing materials in the distillation tower equal to at least a specific value. SOLUTION: A tower 1 has an outer shell housing packing materials 12 and 14 and an (N+1)-th bed, and N-th and (N+1)-th beds indicate the beds on which the packing materials 12 and 14 are packed. Liquid collectors and distributors 13 are placed between the beds for the packing materials 12 and 14. When, for example, argon-oxygen separation is made, a gaseous feed 18 generated from a low-pressure tower enters a distillation tower 10 and produces an ascending vapor phase of a mixture. In the top section of the tower 1, vapor contains a highly volatile component. The vapor is taken out as a tower-top distillate flow 20, condensed, and divided into a product flow 22 and a reflux 24 returned to the tower 1. In this case, the lowest bed of beds for packing materials is provided approximately as high as about 50-80% of the next above bed of the beds for packing materials and the overall height of the packing materials 12 and 14 in a packed tower is adjusted to be at least about 6 m.
