The spark arrester element(50) is provided at least partially with a catalytically active coating. The element is made of a rustfree and acid-proof material, and is in the form of a perforated plate or wire mesh screen. The element is contained within a suitable enclosure or housing(30). An Independent claim is included for an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine incorporating the proposed spark arrester.
